Since I know this will probably get heated, let me remind everyone that this is the internet... And this is obviously a controversial thread. Don't come in unless you're thick skinned and can take the trauma of being told you're wrong. ;]

On the topic of the 2010s, MrTaco, Flatty and I had a bit of a debate at the house as to whether or not the 2010 Camaro SS should be compared to the 2010 Mustang GT or the 2010 Mustang GT500. In reality, neither is really a good comparison.
Pre-S197, the SS was always compared to the Mustang Cobra, but now that Ford has yanked those off the assembly line, what competition is there?
MrTaco and Flatty both agree that the GT500 was created as a competitor for the Corvette, not the Camaro. I'm kinda on the fence about that...

The ss is the competion for the gt. If/when the Z28 is released that will be the competion for the GT500. If you haven't heard much about it read up. LSA equipped FTW.

Unless things change, and looking at their financial stand point i doubt it will, the Z28 isnt going to make production. I believe the muscle/supercar rules have changed now days. The Mustang GT/ Camaro SS/ Challenger RT are all compeating again, sadly the Ford is the Most underpowered, less refined of the group since it still has the solid rear axle and all but that makes it the cheapest. I dont believe the GT500 is made to compete with the Corvette, that was the job of the Ford GT. The GT500 was built just to squeeze a little more money out of the mustang market just like mustang the option add ons of racepak,shelbys,rousch,cobra jet, hertz, the list goes on and on with the whos who of the automotive world trying to maket their own and get a piece. Besides the GT500 is still a family oriented 4seater Muscle car, the vette is a 2 seater supercar, the comparison shouldnt even be made.

Agreed. The GT500 isn't the competion for the 'vette, not even the same class of car. You are probably right, the Z28 will most likely not make it to production, but I can dream can't I? ;P

Camaro / F-Body V6 - Competition for V6 Muffstangs.

Camaro / F-Body V8s - Competition for GT Mustangs.

GT500 Mustang - Competition for Base model C6 Vettes??

Whatever Ford intended the Mustang to be, it is in the same price range as the C6 Vette, and Motor Trend tested it [BEFORE it had the LS3] and the base C6 won hands down.

Camaro SS would own a GT Mustang asshole, so they tested out the GT500 vs. the Camaro SS:

2008 LS3 Base Corvette:

Base price $45,995
Price as tested $56,890

If we are talking about "bang-for-your-buck" price only, his should be the match up:

Camaro V6 - Mustang V6
Camaro SS - Mustang GT
Base Corvette - Mustang GT500

Corvette Z06 - No Ford Competition
Corvette ZR1 - Ford GT??

Chevy wins. I wouldn't ever pay $57,000 for a car that runs a 12.8 1/4 mile. The LS3 Vette does it in 12.5. Try low elevens with a stock Z06.

I have heard about it... Last I heard though, GM had axed the idea of the Z28 for at least a few more years due to both their financial crisis, and the declining economy. The several articles I just read all say the same thing : GM has all the plans for the Z28, but won't be building them for 2011, and probably not for 2012 either. Disappointing, but it's good to at least see GM on the ball with their flagship pony car again. Even if it does weigh 2 tons.

Maybe the Mustang needs a break too. That'd give Ford time to design a new chassis (that doesn't weigh 2 tons), some new engines, and bring back a Cobra model. (Instead of the lineup hopping from V6 - GT - GT500)

I don't think the chassis would lose any wieght by taking a break. Look at the camaro. It went from 3500 to 3900. Newer cars are just heavier.

the new ss is a badass, it is a heavy car but that has to be expected considering all the modern gismos it has. The 93-2002 fbody cars with plastic pannels weighed more than the all steel fbodies of the past. The new zeta car is a larger platform with the same and more gizmos. I read that motortrend test and like I said, some people will compare the Vette and the GT500 but most people dont ever have to decide between buying a vette or GT500. Theyre Marketed toward different people for different reasons. Corvettes are for mid-life crysis or retirees or people who race(typically road course). The GT500 is for the people who lived through the orginal muscle wars and couldnt afford a GT350/500 when they were new(or the originals now). The Corvette was originally made for the Soldiers returning from war in Europe with a MG or Austin Healey. GM decided they need to be selling American sports cars to American troops.

In my opinion, you can't compare the GT500 to a base model corvette. The GT500 is a fat pig that doesn't handle well, the corvette is not a fat pig that does handle well.

Again, opinion only, I think Ford should consider dropping the mustang and bring something cool, sporty, and AWD to america to compete with STI's and Evo's.

Stees and Ebos are turbo 4 banger AWD cars, the Focus is already heading that way. I doubt that a Ford contender will ever get to that level, but who knows.

The Mustang is an icon, no matter how well it performs vs. it's USDM competition, and IMO it would be sad to see it go. I don't think I'd ever own a 4th Gen Camaro, but I was sad to see them go [and glad that they're back]. They are legit RWD cars on a decent chassis with great potential.

lol, bad mofo? sure, all 4360 lbs. Shocked

I don't know what the fuck happened with that one, but it's not getting great reviews as a car. I'm sure the powerplant is decent. As someone on another site said: "TT V6, AWD, 4360 lbs Sedan? Sooner or later something is going to go 'kablooie.'"

Ive been outta the car review world and mainstream media for a min, the initial reviews i read ab the sho looked pretty good. Its got a direct injected, twin turbo DOHC 3.5L v6 that make more power than the 4.6 in the stang. (the sho has 365hp at 5,500rpm and 350tq from 1,500-5,250!), 6speed auto with paddle shift and awd. if they could make a slimmer version(didnt know how much it weighed). If Ford could modify that powerplant to fit a Focus they would have one serious contender, I mean they made a Focus with a Cammer 5.0 they can certainly make this fantasy focus.

As for the new taurus SHO being competitive with the Evo/STi, won't happen its too big. Maybe it can compete with the Legacy GT and Mazdaspeed 6, but I would be will to bet both of those cars weigh an easy 400 lbs less than the previous ones mentioned.

yes, i know the front fenders...but are they plastic or urethane like the bumpers? i also know that the doors are fiberglass cause my cousin had a 96 firebird and got tboned by a crown vic that just demolished the doors.
